Sharps can be placed in clean, biohazard-labeled sharps containers or in clean, heavy plastic bleach or laundry detergent bottles with a screw-on cap that is sealed with a strong tape. Containers must be leak proof, labeled as “Sharps” and the tops should be taped shit. Then they can go in the trash.
NEVER place containers of sharps (e.g. needles and lancets) in the recycling bin.
All hospitals and nursing homes in New York State are mandated by law to accept home-generated sharps as a free, community service through their sharps collection programs.
